Social Media “Account Verification” Scam

posted in: Uncategorized | 8

In today’s world, a lot of these “Account Verification” messages pop up on all of our social media platforms. For me personally, I always think, “Hmm, they just want to make sure I am who I say I am on their platform.” Every year, I see my friend’s stories on how a person is pretending to be them and or is taking over their accounts. Usually, this person asking for “Account Verification” says that if you don’t verify your account, your account can be suspended or deleted. This scam isn’t the app you are using; it is people trying to take over your account. And by the end of the scam, the person has access to all of your messages and contacts.

Some ways to figure this scam out and make sure it doesn’t happen to you are:

  • Platforms never send verification messages via DMs
  • Look at the sender’s profile details
  • Look for spelling errors and strange URLs

Has this ever happened to you? Please let me know in the comments.

Something similar to this happened to one of my family members, but luckily we knew something was up and blocked the person before anything thing bad happened.

Yes, I have seen more instances like this happening more recently, but there have been more scams involving AI, which I will be posting about very soon!

What do you do if you continue with the process and your account ends up getting taken over?

I would try to contact the app you are using and say that there has been an account takeover happening to your account, and they should be able to solve it from there.
